"Here's to Us"

~ 6 ~

Thursday morning found Duo listlessly dusting display cases on the retail side of The Emporium. His baking chores were done, thanks to his early start on the day. He had had trouble sleeping, and ultimately decided that getting up and at it early was better than tossing and turning in bed. He was making cookies by 4:30 a.m., an hour earlier than usual, and now was done with all of his tasks for the day. The clock hanging behind his point of sale table read 9:20. He finished the dusting and put the rag away. He sighed gently.

Gotta sort out these thoughts in my head, he thought. He realized he had been standing in front of the door, staring at nothing, and shook himself. He flipped the sign on the door from Open to Closed, please call again and pulled the shade, then locked the door. He exited the shop through the kitchen and climbed into his car.

Down the alley behind the shops that bordered his; out onto main street. Three blocks north, two west, then the bend around the town square, and due south two more blocks brought him to the university campus. Duo drove to the student union building and parked in one of the spaces marked for visitors. He locked his car and entered the building, passing through a large lounge area with chairs, low tables and a television in one corner, through the snack bar area, and out the other side onto the quadrangle. Past the fountain, a right turn just past the communications building, and down a sloping hill into a quiet spot underneath a walkway between
buildings. Duo loved this place for its relative solitude. There were a couple of large, older oaks, a hedgerow, and a grassy area tailor-made for picnics. Duo settled against the roots of the larger tree and made himself comfortable. The morning sun was warm through the cool autumn air. He leaned back against the oak, propping himself up on his elbows.

Now if only I could figure out what it is that brought me here, he thought. He closed his eyes and let his thoughts drift, something he did when he couldn't get his mind around an idea.

* * *

Heero is attractive, Duo thought after a bit of contemplation, ticking off the facts of the matter. Very. Blue eyes, golden skin, chocolate brown bangs in those blue eyes - Duo smiled at the thought that everything he noticed about Heero was identified with a color. And he's shy; that makes him even more attractive.

I don't know much about his personality, but I know he likes kendo. And my oatmeal pie. He cleaned his plate quite thoroughly last night.

So what makes me like him? Is it just the physical attraction? Why is it I want to get to know him?

Could it be that I'm just lonely? Ready to throw myself at the first man who comes along? Duo rejected that line of reasoning. He had always been choosy about who he dated, to the point of being called finicky by Rachel. No, it was more than that.

Even though I don't know much about him, I feel good around him. Doesn't make much sense, but it's true. Just something I know, without knowing how I know.

So what to do about it?

He's so shy. Maybe I could -

Duo interrupted his thinking to watch a girl and boy wander into his glade. They held hands as they walked lazily, not seeing Duo against the oak. Suddenly the boy broke free from his friend's grasp, both of his hands descending on her ribs. The girl dropped her books and began giggling, pushing him away, a big smile on her face. She swatted at him. He grabbed her around the waist. The couple tumbled onto the soft grass, laughing. As the girl sat up, she saw Duo watching them. She smiled broadly, then playfully hit her friend's head, mussing his hair. The couple rose, retrieved the girl's books, then walked back to the quadrangle.

Duo sighed. That's what I want, he thought. I want to be comfortable with someone. I'm tired of scoping out the man sitting across from me on the first - usually the only - date, wondering if we're compatible. I - I want to settle down. Duo found himself surprised at this insight. Could Heero be the one I want to settle down with?

Duo stood and stretched. Only one way to find out.

He smiled to himself as he headed back to his car.
